Charlotte entrepreneur John Owens has sold his latest venture: a baseball academy that aims to develop future college baseball players.

In an interview, Owens said this week that he has sold Showcase Baseball Academy, which he launched 12 years ago, to fellow entrepreneur Will Simmons, who owns and operates Zero Waste Recycling. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“It was time for me to start slowing down,” Owens said. “My kids have all graduated out of it.”

Owens in 2014 sold a mortgage company he founded, Ameritrust, and still works in the industry. The former UNC Charlotte baseball player opened Showcase’s current facility in Matthews in 2011.

The program has gone from one team to about 30 and typically graduates 40 college-bound players each year, he said. Owens credited his staff, including president Jake Robbins, for building the program.

Simmons is a former college baseball player and has run a number of businesses, Owens said. “It’s exciting to keep the Showcase Baseball Academy legacy going,” he said.
